What is the Investigative Journalism Fund?<\/strong>
\nThis fund supports local journalism that is essential to a vibrant community and a healthy democracy.<\/p>\n

In partnership with Journalism Funding Partners, a 501(c)(3) organization, the Investigative Journalism Fund provides an opportunity for the community to make tax-deductible donations that help The Daily Herald shine a light on important issues. The Daily Herald maintains editorial control over content produced with fund resources.<\/p>\n

Why was the Investigative Journalism Fund established?<\/strong>
\nServing as the community watchdog is a core responsibility of the press \u2013 and it is an expensive undertaking. Investigative reporters and editors can spend months on a single story to surface the information that citizens in a democracy deserve to know.<\/p>\n

Severe declines in advertising revenues and the changing media landscape make it challenging for The Daily Herald to afford robust journalism that covers all the critical areas of a community. The fund was established in March 2020 to support reporting that holds those in power accountable and shines a light on important issues that impact our community.<\/p>\n

Our award-winning coverage often spurs community action and sets the agenda for public policy debate.<\/p>\n

How does the Investigative Journalism Fund work?<\/strong>
\nThe fund promotes shared investment in local journalism that benefits the community.<\/p>\n

Individuals, nonprofits, corporations, local businesses, philanthropic foundations, and others who believe in the value of local, trusted journalism can make tax-deductible contributions to this fund.<\/p>\n

Journalism Funding Partners is the fiscal sponsor for the fund and ensures community contributions are used to support expanded coverage of investigative and other under-reported stories.<\/p>\n

How much money is needed for investigative journalism?<\/strong>
\nSince the fund was established in March 2020, our community is already seeing the impact from their generosity through published stories.<\/p>\n

The fund has helped The Daily Herald add an investigative reporter and it supports, in part, the costs of investigative editing by our news team \u2013 but we need ongoing support.<\/p>\n

Our five-year goal is to raise $750,000 for this labor-intensive and time-consuming reporting that benefits our community.<\/p>\n
