The Republican Party and Donald Trump recently did two unwise things.

The Party subpoenaed Bill Clinton to testify under oath, which he did. Formerly relatively quiet, he is now speaking out often on current issues.
Trump said seminary student and Texas Senatorial Candidate Democrat James Talarico is “an insult to Jesus.” thus putting him into the national conversation.

I have to congratulate Mr. Welch on his column, “Compassion Without Accountability Is Not Compassion”. I think it is spot on target. Sixty-five years ago, JFK, in his inaugural address said, “To those people in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves”, with the key phrase “help them help themselves” echoing Mr. Welch’s editorial. Thank you again Mr. Welch for stating the obvious and reminding us that we cannot help those that won’t help themselves.

“Compassion without accountability is not compassion”, was a well written article by Todd Welch. One issue he failed to address was that of brain damage from continued alcohol or drug abuse. Brain damage, at some point, is permanent, not reversible and basically untreatable. Those people are unlikely to change their lives regardless of accountability or compassion; they are way beyond realizing they have a problem. Some types of mental illness are also extremely difficult (and probably costly) to treat. Another problem is that people have the legal right to refuse treatment; this doesn’t serve them or society in any positive way.

There are ongoing discussions about potentially consolidating Everett Transit into Community Transit, and many residents may not realize this decision could be made without a public vote.

Letter: Do we need yet another housing agency?

I was totally shocked to read in your Tuesday, April 14th edition that “work is underway to create new Washington housing agency”. This is totally amazing considering that “Washington boasts 221 housing-related programs across 30 state agencies.” Do we really need to add another state agency to the 30 that we already have and can not manage the problem? Will we need to raise taxes to pay for this new state agency in addition to the 30 we’re already paying for that are not working. Having said that, if the government still must go forward with another ineffective agency then I would suggest that the government read the Todd Welch article in your Wednesday, April 14th edition “compassion without accountability is not compassion.”
